Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get an edible plant with GoGoGarden?
You choose which plants you would like, whether in ground or in container. Then, you pay the price on the menu, and we show up with an edible plant, a GoGoGarden sign and an easy to follow booklet about caring for the plant.
You then can choose to be mapped on our online system that connects GoGoGardeners to your business. The map can specify when your plant blooms, and when it fruits. It will also specify if you invite the public to harvest.
Is it expensive?
We are a non-profit organization, so we price our services as low as possible to deliver you a quality product. The prices listed include not only the plant itself, but the repotting, which includes the soil, and pot. The price also includes the listing on our website.
Do you maintenance the plant?
We do not typically exclusively maintenance the plants because we feel it is part of the joy of having them that people can help water, feed, prune and harvest the plant. We encourage there to be a log of maintenance for customers to interact with. It is a chance to talk with others and care for something together.
If a purchaser is worried about the care of their plant, there can be special circumstances arranged with GoGoGarden to maintenance plants.
Who owns the food that grows?
We encourage the owners of the edible plants to share their food with the public, especially once the plant starts producing more food than the caregiver may want. And in the unlikely event someone takes all of the fruit, it has done a good purpose, because it is for those in need of healthy food.
What about rats and mice?
In the event that a business has so many plants that rats and mice become an issue, peppermint is a deterrent that can be added in plant or spray form.
What about insect pests, or plant disease?
Outdoor plants have natural ecosystems that work with certain beneficial insects. These insects already exist in the soil and can help your plant thrive. In contrast, pests are not good for your plants and are best kept away by keeping your plant healthy in the first place. There are also adequate organic pesticides and pairing plants that keep pests away. Indoor plants have adequate soil and do not need the insects to break down the nutrients and break up the soil.
If your plant develops a disease, you can call us or consult online sources for help.

What about liability?
Food should be of similar quality to that of a grocery store to be donated to the public. There are protections in place for those who donate food. There is caselaw to suggest potted plants are not proximate causes for injury, maintenance once a week is enough for any negligence liability, and protections are given to those who donate food against food poisoning claims.
What about zoning?
Agricultural uses are permitted in all zones in NYC except for amusement park zones. Private entities are in the best position to plant fruit trees and edible plants because they are not required to only plant what is on the NYC Park’s Department Approved Species list, which is very limited. Only street trees are required to be the specific species on the approved species list. Businesses and private entities have much more freedom, and there are landscaping requirements already. Why not make it productive?
There is also an incentive for buildings in New York, that are non-residential, to have a rooftop greenhouse. If so, it that square footage does not count towards the total allowance of sq feet in the lot.
